It’s that time of year where we should ask ourselves this question. It’s easy to assume that if our car’s tires performed well last year, or if we recently purchased a car with new tires, that the tires will perform well this winter. However, that’s not a safe assumption.

First, we need to understand there are three main types of tires:
• Performance
• All Season
• Winter

Performance tires are designed for optimum performance and handling in warm climates rather than for use in cold, snowy or icy weather conditions. For driving in these winter conditions, the best tire options are the all-season or winter tires. All-season tires are designed to work well in dry, wet, snowy or slushy conditions but both all-season and winter tires offer better traction and are extremely efficient when chosen for your particular car’s specifications.

Let’s take a closer look.

All season tires typically have a “mud & snow” rating that is displayed on the sidewall of a tire. It often looks like “M+S” or “M/S”. If your tires don’t show this designation and you don’t have winter tires (which often have a snowflake icon), you need to be especially careful this winter.

Even if your vehicles is equipped with antilock brakes, traction control and all wheel drive, tires still play a huge role in helping you control your vehicle and helping those systems function to their fullest potential.

Performance Tires
This can be great in the warmer months. However, when the weather turns colder they wont grip the road nearly as well. The tread pattern will not work very well at all in snow. You may have seen people trying to drive in the snow with performance tires. They’re often the ones who cant get any traction at all, even on flat ground.

If you have performance tires without a M+S rating, we strongly advise you to get another set of tires for the winter.

All Season Tires
These work well for most winters in our area. Make sure your tires still have plenty of life left in them. If the wear bars in the tread are nearly flush with the tread, you wont get very much grip in the snow and ice. You will also be more likely to hydroplane in the rain.

Winter Tires
If you plan on making trips over the pass this winter or just want extra traction, take a look at winter specific tires. Designs have changed over the years. Studless snow tires can offer long life, good traction and have very little impact on fuel economy. These tires offer better grip in snow and ice – more than all season tires and leaps and bounds more than performance tires. Performance winter tires are also available to help maintain the crisp handling found in many European cars.

Cost
You might be thinking that winter tires will put a big dent in your wallet. However, the cost is not as high when you calculate in the longer life of your current tires – when your winter tires are on, your summer tires aren’t being wore down.

Protecting your tires and wheels
The lower ratio aspect of high-performance tires aids in performance and handling but your tire pressure should be checked regularly and always maintained at the recommended levels for your particular vehicle. Improper tire inflation can cause serious wheel and tire damage if operated on rough or damaged road surfaces, and confronting road debris or unusual obstacles can decrease your tire’s efficiency as well. While high-performance tires may deliver high-response handling, one should remember that they may also provide a less comfortable ride, make more noise and wear more quickly than other tire choices.

For more information about tires, consult your owner’s manual, or give Woodinville Sports Car Service a call at 425-402-7878. We are happy to help.
