Be specific. The more detail you can give us up front, the faster we can tell you something genuinely useful rather than a range wide enough to be meaningless. Four things help most:

  • Year, model and engine: a 2014 328i and a 2014 335i are different cars underneath, and the fix often differs with them.
  • What it is actually doing: when it happens, how often, hot or cold, at what speed. "Rattles for two seconds on a cold start" tells us far more than "makes a noise."
  • Any codes or paperwork you already have: including a quote from somewhere else. We would rather look at it than pretend it does not exist.
  • What you want out of it: a car you plan to keep for another five years gets a different recommendation than one you are selling in spring.
