The rear main seal is one of the cheapest parts on the car and one of the biggest jobs. It rides behind the flywheel, so the transmission comes out before anyone can touch it. There is no shortcut. Here's the line we draw. A seep that darkens a gasket edge but never reaches the ground can wait for your next oil change, when the car is already up and half the labor is spent. A film under the pan after a run to Everett isn't an emergency. What can't wait: oil dripping onto the exhaust manifold, oil reaching the accessory belt, oil pooling in the spark plug wells, and any leak that moves the dipstick between changes. Each ruins something costlier while you wait, and the first is how engine fires start. A seep is a scheduling problem. A drip onto hot exhaust is a today problem.
