The Oil Approval Matters More Than the Viscosity
Viscosity is the easy half. The approval is the part that matters: BMW Longlife LL-01, LL-04 and LL-17 FE+ are not interchangeable, and which one your engine wants depends on the engine family and whether there is a particulate filter downstream. Pour LL-01 into a car that specifies LL-04 and you shorten the life of parts nobody wants to buy twice. There is a running-cost argument as well, since fueleconomy.gov notes that using the manufacturer's recommended grade of motor oil improves gas mileage by 1%–2% on its own. We use the right approval and an OEM filter. Always.
Brake Fluid Runs on the Clock, Not the Odometer
BMW specifies a brake fluid change every two years regardless of mileage. Mileage is irrelevant here. The fluid is hygroscopic — a technical way of saying it pulls moisture out of the air — and water in the system drops the boiling point until a long descent leaves the pedal soft underfoot. Picture the grade coming down US-2 from Stevens Pass. That is where tired fluid announces itself, not in a parking lot. Microfilters and air filters go on the same visit, since they are the items most often skipped by shops working from a generic service menu.
The Fluids Called Lifetime Are Not
BMW described some fluids as lifetime, and ZF, which builds the 8-speed automatic behind most modern BMWs, has since published its own service guidance for that gearbox. Whose lifetime did they mean? On a car you intend to keep past the loan, a fluid and filter change is cheap insurance, and the same logic covers the transfer case and differentials on an xDrive that has spent a decade on wet Snohomish County roads. Nothing there is lifetime.
A BMW Past Warranty Needs a Shorter Leash
Factory intervals were written for cars still under warranty. Age changes the math. A 120,000-mile 335i is a different animal from a two-year-old lease return, so the interval tightens: oil sooner, cooling hoses inspected rather than assumed, chain rattle listened for on N20 and N47 engines. Spark plugs vary by engine family too, and an N54 pushing boost through them wants a fresh set well before a naturally aspirated N52 would ever ask. Some items tolerate a short delay. Oil and brake fluid do not, because both degrade on their own regardless of how carefully you drive. We will tell you plainly which is which rather than selling you the whole list.
What oil does my BMW need?
It depends on the engine, not the model year on the door. Give us the VIN and we will confirm the approval — LL-01, LL-04 or LL-17 FE+ — along with the correct filter for that engine.
How often should the ZF 8-speed transmission fluid be changed?
Sooner than "lifetime" implies. On a car kept long term, especially an xDrive or one that tows, a fluid and pan service protects a transmission that is expensive to put right.
