Some Golf R configurations use staggered tire fitments with narrower tires on the front axle and wider tires on the rear, optimized for the 4MOTION AWD system's torque distribution. These staggered fitments cannot be rotated front-to-rear because the tire widths are different. The correct rotation is a side-to-side swap on the same axle — demounting the tire from the wheel and remounting it on the opposite wheel of the same axle.

Volkswagen specifies OE-marked tires for the Golf GTI and Golf R that are developed to work with the MQB suspension tuning. The Golf GTI and Golf R's MQB suspension geometry is designed to tight tolerances that deliver the precise steering feel these cars are known for. New tires installed without a four-wheel alignment check on a GTI or Golf R are at risk of uneven wear if the geometry is out of spec — rear toe variation on the Golf R produces measurable feathering on rear tires within a few thousand miles.
