Woodinville, WA’s Trusted Porsche Engine Mechanics
Porsche engines span a wide reliability range depending on generation. The current 3.0T turbocharged flat-six in the 992 Carrera and the 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six in the GT3 and GT4 are excellent engines with strong long-term reliability records. The M96 and M97 engines in the 996 and 997 have the IMS bearing issue that made them notorious in the enthusiast community — but it is a manageable risk with proper inspection and, where appropriate, upgraded bearing installation. The 718 flat-four is a capable engine with one specific maintenance pattern to understand. And the first-generation Cayenne V6 has a coolant system failure point that is catastrophic if ignored. At Woodinville Sports Cars, we have extensive hands-on Porsche engine experience and the model-specific knowledge to address all of these correctly.
997 Rear Main Seal, Water Pump, and Cooling System
The 997 Carrera (2005–2012) has three significant cooling and oil system service areas beyond the IMS. The rear main seal — which seals the back of the crankshaft on the 911's rear-engine layout — is accessible only with gearbox removal and is a well-documented leak point at high mileage. The water pump uses an electric auxiliary pump in addition to the mechanically driven main pump — the auxiliary pump fails on high-mileage 997s and produces intermittent temperature spikes. The coolant heat exchanger — an oil-to-coolant heat exchanger on the engine — develops internal leaks that allow coolant and oil to mix, which is detectable through oil analysis and by the presence of milky residue on the oil cap.
These three 997 service items are frequently addressed together on high-mileage engines, as the labor for gearbox removal covers the rear main seal and provides access for additional cooling system work. We evaluate all three as a combined service for 997s approaching or past 80,000 miles with no documented service history for these items.
718 Flat-Four Oil Dilution Management
The MA1 2.0T and 2.5T flat-four engines in the 718 Boxster and Cayman (2016–2021) use direct injection that introduces fuel wash-down into the engine oil under certain conditions. Cold weather, short-trip driving, and extended low-load operation are the primary contributors. The fuel dilutes the oil, reducing its viscosity and lubrication properties, and fouls the spark plugs — producing the cold-start misfire codes discussed on our check engine light page.
Management involves more frequent oil changes (every 5,000 to 7,000 miles rather than the CBS maximum), avoidance of extended short-trip use where possible, and regular spark plug inspection. The condition is manageable and does not prevent the 718 flat-four from being a durable long-term engine when properly maintained. It is also why we do not recommend the CBS maximum service interval for 718 flat-four owners driving in Pacific Northwest winter conditions.
Current Generation Engine Maintenance
The 9A2 Evo 3.0T turbocharged flat-six in the 992 Carrera and the 9A3 4.0L naturally aspirated flat-six in the GT3 and GT4 are the most reliable Porsche engines we service. Long-term maintenance involves carbon buildup monitoring on the 9A2 (direct injection, walnut blasting at 60,000 miles), oil analysis at high mileage, and correct Porsche A40-approved oil specification. For related Porsche engine services, see our Porsche oil leak repair page for seal and gasket concerns across all generations, our Porsche oil change page for correct Porsche A40 oil specification, and our Porsche check engine light page for engine fault code diagnosis including IMS-related codes.
Quick Takeaways
- IMS (Intermediate Shaft) bearing failure on M96/M97 engines (996, 997 pre-2009 non-DFI, 986/987 Boxster/Cayman) is catastrophic — replacement with upgraded bearings is strongly recommended.
- 997 rear main seal and coolant system repairs — water pump, heat exchanger, thermostat — are among the most common major services on this generation.
- The 718 flat-four MA1 engine has documented oil dilution from direct injection fuel wash-down — not a defect but requires specific maintenance awareness.
- 9PA Cayenne 3.6L V6 coolant pipe failure under the intake manifold is a critical repair — the car should not be driven with coolant system fault codes.
- Woodinville Sports Cars performs all Porsche engine repairs under a 24-month/24,000-mile warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I do a proactive IMS bearing replacement on my 997?
For non-DFI 997s (2005–2008) that have not had the bearing replaced, yes — we strongly recommend it. The IMS Solution from LN Engineering eliminates the failure mode entirely by replacing the dual-row ball bearing with a plain bearing design that is not subject to the same wear pattern. The cost of the replacement is a fraction of the cost of engine reconstruction after IMS failure.
My 997 water temperature rises and then returns to normal during highway driving. What is wrong?
This intermittent temperature spike pattern on a 997 is the classic symptom of auxiliary water pump failure. The auxiliary pump supplements coolant flow at idle and low engine speeds — when it fails, coolant circulation drops under certain conditions, producing a temperature spike that resolves when engine speed increases and the main mechanical pump provides full flow.
Is the 718 Boxster flat-four oil dilution issue serious?
It is a maintenance challenge rather than a design defect that makes the engine unreliable. With appropriate oil change intervals, correct oil specification, and spark plug monitoring, the 718 flat-four is a capable and durable engine. The key is not using the CBS maximum interval and not ignoring cold-start misfire symptoms.
Does Woodinville Sports Cars perform Porsche engine replacements?
Yes. We source remanufactured flat-six engines for 996, 997, 986, and 987 applications and perform installation with full PIWIS adaptation. For 992 and 982 models, we source engines from vetted OEM-specification suppliers.
